Louisiana Fishing Report July 2024

Fishing has been very good throughout July. Speckled trout and redfish have been plentiful during the early morning. The trick to staying on a good bite was getting out early and targeting diving birds for trout and finding good tide lines moving through the marsh for redfish. Working deeper water channels as the water temps were getting into the upper 80's worked well for those trout. Finding a lot of 12 inch to 13 inch trout was easy but with the size limit change, you have to stick and move to find keepers. If you find a good bite with a lot of 12 to 13 inch trout, staying persistent and working the outer edges of those schools would put keeper trout in the box. We had to do a lot of moving around to get away from those smaller trout, but persistence was key to finding those 13+ inch trout.

July was very hot and and getting an early start well before sunrise gave us the opportunity to put some really nice boxes together before the heat set in.

Live shrimp produced the bigger trout and reds. Although plastics were putting large #'s in boat, it was producing smaller fish.

The biggest trout were caught with live croaker on bottom in about 16 to 18 foot of water with a good tide.

The red snapper season remains open and we only had 3 snapper trips in July, but all resulted in quick limits of red snapper and a lot of nice sized mangrove snapper and some bonus cobia catches. Sharks were terrible in July. After putting a few snapper in the boat quickly, it was like ringing the dinner bell for the sharks. The tax man was a real problem this month but staying on the move allowed us to put together limits of snapper on every trip.

The dog days of summer are upon us and getting out early to beat the heat and staying persistent and moving until you find what you are targeting will get the job done.
